Nikon launches V1 and J1 in India

Nikon has finally launched the Nikon 1 lineup in India, with the introduction of the Nikon V1 and J1 cameras. It was long debated whether Nikon would ever venture into the mirrorless-interchangeable lens camera market, but with the Nikon 1 series, Nikon has put all rumors to rest.

The J1 is the entry-level model while the V1 is its elder sibling, aimed towards more advanced users. The two cameras are identical in many respects, including the new 10 megapixel, 1-inch CX format sensor that outputs imaging data to a shared Expeed 3 processor. Nikon 1 system also incorporates a proprietary 1 lens mount. The two cameras also share the focusing system, a hybrid of phase and contrast detection methods, which allows for the cameras to acquire and track focus with great accuracy.

Despite the similarity in circuitry, these are two different cameras, aimed at two different kinds of user base. The design of the J1 is very slim, giving it the resemblance of a mere point-and-shoot. It does feature an electronic viewfinder along with a pop-up flash that can be raised with the help of a button.

The V1, regarded as the elder sibling offers a mixed bag of goodies. While it loses the pop-up flash and the electronic viewfinder, we find a convenient accessory port on the top of the camera that can be used to attach proprietary external flashes or microphones to the camera. The V1 also features the ability to switch between electronic and mechanical shutters, in case one would feel the need to take shots at a blazing 1/6000 of a second (on electronic shutter mode).

Both the cameras feature video recording at 1080p (60i) along with a slow motion and super slow motion movie mode (400 fps at 640x240 and 1,200 fps at 320x120). There is also "motion snapshot" mode that seems to resemble something like stop-motion graphics, but that is something we'd like to explore once we have the cameras in hand.

The lenses have a conversion factor of 2.7x, meaning that a 10mm lens on a Nikon 1 camera would yield a field-of-view of 27mm. The focusing system on the Nikon 1 is something to talk about. It boasts of the most focusing points in a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera system. The hybrid phase-contrast-detection based focusing also makes it the fastest focusing cameras in their class.
Nikon has also introduced a lens adapter for the 1 series that would allow users to attach their regular F Mount lenses onto the V1 and the J1. The process, however, is not without a few drawbacks. For one, the DSLR lenses were designed for bigger sensors, so the image quality yielded by them might not match their DSLR counterpart. There is also the 2.7x conversion factor to keep in mind.
The Nikon 1 system is now available at the following prices for the various kits.
Nikon 1 V1 with 10-30mm lens - Rs. 43, 950
Nikon 1 V1 with 10-30mm + 30-110mm lens - Rs. 53, 950

Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm lens - Rs. 29,950
Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm + 30-110mm lens - Rs. 39,950
Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm + 30-110mm lens (special pink kit) - Rs. 40,950

Next iPhone will come with ‘retina display’

Apple Inc’s new iPhone will have a sharper and bigger 4.6-inch “retina” display and is set to be launched around the second quarter.

Sales of the iPhone, first introduced in 2007 with the touch screen template now adopted by its rivals, account for around half Apple’s total sales.

Apple has decided on the bigger 4.6-inch display for its next iPhone and started placing orders to its suppliers.

Samsung, which is also the biggest challenger to Apple in smartphones, uses 4.6-inch OLED display for its flagship Galaxy S II smartphone, introduced in April last year.

The high-definition “retina” display – containing several times as many pixels within the same area – is used in the latest iPad released earlier this month.

The latest iPhone 4S was introduced in October last year.

How to Keep jewels glistening

It is not just about owning them; true jewellery lovers treat their treasures with a lot of love and care.

1. Make sure to put your jewellery aside when engaging in activities that might expose it to chemicals (for example, swimming). If you aren’t in the habit of removing your jewellery, especially that on your hand then opt for rubber gloves.

2. It is advisable to have your bead or pearl necklaces restrung every couple of years, depending on how often you wear them. Ideally, all kinds of studded jewellery should be cleaned at least once a month.

3. The most recommended way of cleaning jewellery is to use warm mild soap water solution and a brush with soft bristles. You can then pat it dry with a soft cloth

4. Always check your jewellery for loose gems and stones, but don’t tug at them or try to put them back by yourself. Visit a jewellery instead.

5. To protect your silver, always wrap it in jeweller’s tissue and save it in a plastic zip lock bag and seal

6. Remember that real silver is a very soft metal and can be damaged by a fingernail or even a wadded piece of fabric. Hence, avoid being too rough with it.

7. It is necessary to remove gold jewellery before you take a shower. Soap can aid the formation of a film on the jewellery that’ll make it appear dull

8. Platinum jewellery should always be treated with more care. It should be stored separately and pieces must not touch each other, else they tend to leave scratches

9. Jewellery should always be worn after the application of cosmetics as these can affect its shine.

10. The surface of pearl jewellery is extremely soft and can be scratched by hard metal edges hence must be stored in cotton or something.

Big things come in small packages

Nobody wants to be the odd one out in a crowd. Do children suffering from Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) feel this way?Does being short and small impact them psychologically? It is essential to find solutions to make their life happier.

Globally, children from all races, classes or communities are affected by GHD. One of the major causes of growth failure in children is GHD. If the body does not produce enough growth hormone (a substance produced and released by pituitary gland located in the center of the brain), there is a good chance of the child suffering from GHD.

Growth hormone is primarily responsible for developing height to its full potential. Pituitary insufficiency may be genetic, acquired or through developmental abnormality. Children suffering from the deficiency have normal body proportions and often tend to look younger than their peers.A GHD child shows normal growth till he/she is two to three years old after which the growth process starts getting delayed. Later the growth velocity becomes very poor i.e. often less than three cm/year. Even bone age of the affected child gets retarded.

Detection & therapy
As soon as parents suspect growth failure in their child, they should consult a specialist such as a pediatrician or endocrinologist. In order to check if the child has GHD, the following tests should be conducted:
  • Height measurement corresponding to age
  • X-ray of child's wrist to know his or her bone age
  • Blood sample test to check for the possibility of thyroid hormone deficiency
  • Growth hormone stimulation tests to assess growth hormone deficiency.
  • Other tests such as CT scan or an MRI of brain can be conducted.Images obtained from these tests can reveal presence of tumors or malfunction of pituitary gland.
If the result for GHD tests is positive then required growth therapy should be given to the child as recommended by the doctor. Growth therapy is given daily or several times a week.
Parents should take extra care in such cases because there is a high possibility that their children will be affected psycho-socially by their short stature and small size. Generally, there can be two types of scenarios. A child may feel disturbed and even traumatized because people think he is much younger than he/she is. The child may self-interpret and behave in an immature manner thinking he/she is still as young as he/she looks.
In both cases, parents should be highly alert and keep a strict watch on their child's behavior changing wrong perceptions.

They should boost the morale and develop the confidence of their child encouraging the build-up of positive energy.

Parents should identify their child's strengths, be it swimming, writing, singing or painting, and work towards enhancing the skills. The child should be made to believe that every individual is unique. Changing the child's mindset can change his/her world.

By boosting the child's inner confidence pent-up emotions (negativity) can be wiped out promoting a healthy present and a promising future for the child.
