Job interviews: The Best Answers for 3 Sticky Interview Questions

Job interviews are nerve-racking experiences even under the best of circumstances. Every now and again, an interviewer will throw out a question that just completely trips you up. It makes you feel, look, and sound uncomfortable—and that's a surefire way to land yourself on the rejection list. That's why it's essential to prepare.

Here are three of the most common questions interviewers ask that can lead to horrible answers for the unprepared. Take a minute to review them and create a strong response for each. Then practice, practice, practice. Remember: The more preparation you do ahead of time, the more confident and well-spoken you'll be. So don't skip on the prep time.

1. What's your biggest weakness? This one is a favorite for interviewers so it shouldn't come as a shock when you hear it. Unfortunately, too many people flounder and end up saying something like, "I don't know; I can't think of any." Sure, it's uncomfortable to spotlight your weaknesses when you're there to sell yourself. But, if you're unable to do it, you come off as someone who either: (a) honestly believes you have no faults, (b) has never engaged in true self-reflection, or (c) is too afraid to be authentic—and that suggests your hiding some pretty awful weaknesses.

The second worst answer is to use that cliche "trick" where you take a trait that's really a strength and try to spin it into a weakness. You know…things like, "Sometimes, I just care too much about doing a good job" or "I give too much to my work."

Sure. That's your biggest weakness. Riiiiiight.

It's best to be authentic, even though it means sharing a characteristic that's not the most flattering. Share a trait that really IS an area of growth for you and—more importantly—share what you've done and are currently doing to improve it. This shows that you've done some self-reflection and that you aren't afraid of being real in the workplace. It also shows that you recognize the areas on which you should focus your professional development activities.

2. How have you been keeping busy? What professional development activities do you engage in outside of work?

If you've been unemployed for any period of time, your interviewer will likely want to know how you're spending your downtime. The worst answer is something like, "I've been catching up on sleep," or "Trying to find a job." Of course you're looking for work—that's a given. And no one wants to hear about your personal activities, whether it involves sleep, time with the kids, or a new workout regimen.

Solely focus your answer on the professional development activities you've been doing: What books are you reading? What classes are you taking? What professional associations are you participating in? What have you done to continue your professional growth during this down time? How are you ensuring your skills are remaining competitive while out of the workforce? This question is an opportunity to shine; don't brush it off.

If you're currently employed, the interviewer might ask a different version of this question, looking for the same response. It might sound something like, "What professional development activities do you engage in outside of work?"

Sadly, a lot of people say things like, "Well, I have two kids so I don't have much time for that kind of thing." Bad answer. If you're not participating in professional development activities regularly, you should be. There's no excuse not to—no matter how busy you are. If you can't answer this question, it looks as if you really don't care about your career. And that makes the decision whether or not to hire you a no-brainer for the interviewer.

3. Do you have any questions for me?

This is how most interviewers wrap up the conversation. It's almost a guarantee that they will ask this so it's unbelievable to me that so many people don't have a strong response. Come up with a handful of questions you can ask any interviewer. And don't forget to do your company research too so that you can ask some specifics questions about the business while also showing off your current level of understanding. Here are a few examples of the questions you can ask:
  • "When you look at the previous people who were successful in this role, what separated the good from the great?"
  • "How do you see this position growing with the company in the future?"
  • "Given my background and experience, how well do you think my skills would suit this position?"
  • "What are some current business initiatives and how do you envision this role contributing to achieving them?"
All of these questions show that you really care about doing well in the role and that you're looking at this as a long-term career move. They also show that you're interested in the big picture impact this role has on the business. These questions will help keep the conversation going while demonstrating that you're a professional who prepared for this conversation adequately.

How to Realistically Achieve Work-Life Balance

Balance is hard. Imagine walking on a tight-rope for 18 hours a day; it's just not possible. So you need to re-frame what work-life balance actually means, and how you will achieve it realistically within your own life and career.

1. Redefine balance. There's no shame if you want to focus on your career or attend a friend's barbecue. We all define work-life balance differently, and your first step to achieving your own bit of bliss is to accept that your version of balance may be different than your friends, family, and society. This is your life and you decide how you allocate your time.

2. Choose one priority. Perhaps it's the time to exercise three times a week. Or maybe you want a promotion. Or the ability to have sit-down dinners with your kids, partner, or friends. Don't get wrapped up in trying to "have it all" Instead, decide if you want to focus on your life or work. You can't do both; balance happens over time, not all at once. Maybe you hunker down and work for three months, and then lighten up for the following few months. When you dedicate your time to pursuing your priorities and what's important to you, you'll automatically reduce any strain.

3. Plan ahead. It may not be spontaneous to schedule life, but you're more likely to be successful at managing your priorities if they're on your calendar. Don't just talk about a date night, make it a recurring appointment. Then take a few minutes to book three months of restaurant reservations in advance. Or partner with a friend and schedule an ongoing activity for every Saturday. Your partner will keep you accountable and you'll have something to look forward to during the week. When it's time to work fun into your schedule, you won't have to worry about a thing.

4. Work at work. Even though careers are a bigger part of our lives than ever before, resist bringing work into every moment of your life. Try tracking your time, and you'll discover you don't actually work the entire time you think you are. Even workaholics vastly overestimate the number of hours they put their nose to the grindstone. You'll be more productive (i.e., spend less time on Pinterest and Facebook) if you limit your workday to the time you're in the office, not to mention have more time for hobbies at home.

5. Change something. You have to make sacrifices to achieve balance. In most cases, small changes will produce big results, but sometimes you'll need to prepare to do something more drastic. If your commute is unbearable, consider moving. If you want a promotion, you may have to put dance classes on hold. If you can't leave your job when your child is sick, try to find a new one. These choices aren't easy, but making big decisions will allow you to improve the quality of your life or career immensely.

Work-life balance is often elusive, but if you are honest with yourself about your priorities and time, and dedicate some real energy toward the cause, you'll be able to discover your own personal equilibrium.

Avoid these muscle mistakes to stay fit

Gaining strength is easy when you first start hitting the gym. Your muscles go through a learning process, so almost anything you do triggers growth. But eventually your muscles adapt and improvements level off, and you have to train smarter to see results. Hit the refresh button by purging your fitness plan of these common pitfalls.

Mistake 1: You don't train your legs
Most guys' workouts are top-heavy. A sign of true fitness is a muscular backside. The largest muscles, including the glutes, are in your lower body. Training them releases hormones that build size and strength everywhere else.

Try this: The elevated back-foot split squat. Hold a bar across your upper back using an overhand grip. Assume a staggered stance, with your left foot forward and your right foot back and on a six-inch step. Lower your body as far as you can and then push back up to the starting position. Do 10 reps, switch legs and repeat. That's one set; do three.

Mistake 2: You run too much
Logging km isn't a total waste of time, but it's close. This is because your body adapts quickly to repetitive movement, and that's running in a nutshell. Plus, running doesn't activate your fast twitch muscle fibres, which are great fat burners and body builders.

Try this: Intervals-short bursts of intense activity followed by active rest. Set a treadmill to an eight per cent incline and run for 30 seconds. Then rest for one minute. Do this 10 times. This type of training leads to gains in aerobic and anaerobic performance that are significantly greater than with steady-state cardio, according to a recent Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research study.

Mistake: 3 You lift too slowly
Explosive lifting leads to fast gains. It activates more fast-twitch muscle fibres, which have the greatest growth potential. So lift like you mean it. You'll also crank up your heart rate, inadvertently increasing the number of calories you burn.

Try this: Do the lifting phase of each exercise as fast as possible. (The actual speed doesn't matter. As long as the movement is explosive, your body will recruit fast-twitch fibres.) Then take at least two seconds to lower the weight.

Mistake 4: You stay in a comfort zone
Professional athletes don't sharpen their game simply by working on their strengths-they also eliminate weaknesses. So should you.

Try this: Perform compound exercises (that is, moves that target multiple muscles), like deadlifts, chinups and dips. They're some of the toughest exercises you can do, and you can't make serious gains without them.

Haphazard censorship? Leaked list of blocked websites in India

An analysis of a leaked list of items that were ordered to be blocked by Indian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) on directions from the Department of Telecom bring to light the inconsistencies in India's online censorship efforts.

Pranesh Prakash, programme manager at the Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), analysed the 309 specific items that were asked to be censored from August 18, till August 21, 2012 by the Indian government following the recent incidents of communal violence and the mass exodus of North East Indians from Bangalore.

"It is clear that the list was not compiled with sufficient care," Prakash writes in a post on the CIS website that reveals several egregious errors in the censorship process.
While the government put on its censor gear to apparently stop rumours from spreading, Prakash discovered that "people and posts debunking rumours have been blocked." Also there are some items on the list that do not even exist online.

The 309 items that were ordered to be blocked include URLs, Twitter accounts, img tags, blog posts, blogs, and a few websites.

Prakash, a graduate of the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, also raises the questions on the legal standing of the government's actions. "The blocking of many of the items on that list are legally questionable and morally indefensible, even while a some of the items ought, in my estimation, to be removed," he says.

Indian ISPs are also known to go overboard in their efforts to comply with any government order. There have been numerous incidents in the past when ISPs were asked to block a specific URL and they ended up blocking entire domains. The latest round of censorship is also no different. There have been reports of Airtel blocking the entire YouTube short URL youtu.be in some cities.

CIS hasn't published the complete list of the blocked items given "the sensitivity of the issue" but has posted a list of domains from which specific items have been asked to be blocked, though the websites have not been blocked.

5 changes you should be aware of while filing tax returns

Filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) isn’t anybody’s idea of “fun”. But every year this chore is getting lighter. Like every other year, this year too the government has made changes to its ITR forms. Even if you are not a Do-It-Yourself kind of person and would rather delegate the task of filing returns to a chartered accountant or a Tax Return Preparer (TRP) or prefer using online e-filing portals, this information will definitely come in handy.
More than Rs 10 lakh: The biggest change which came this year as far as filing of returns go is with compulsory e-filing. Unlike prior years, where it was mandatory only for firms and companies to e-file the ITRs, going forward, it’s mandatory for many more people to do so. Says Parizad Sirwalla, Partner (Tax), KPMG: “It is now mandatory for people with more than Rs 10 lakh of total income to file their ITRs online.” So, if you are someone who falls in this category, you can e-file your ITRs at the tax department’s website or use portals like Taxspanner.com, Taxsmile.com or Myitreturn.com, to name a few. (The direct efiling site url is: https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in)
The biggest change which came this year as far as filing of returns go is with compulsory e-filing
Keep in mind that you won’t need to digitally sign your ITR forms. You can still use the traditional method of physically signing the paper ITR-V (the online acknowledge you get after the returns are filed) and send it to the Income Tax office in Bangalore.
Assets abroad: The next change is applicable to you if you have any kind of foreign assets. Going forward, you too will have to e-file your returns. Resident assessees having assets located outside India have to e-file their returns. This applies even if your total income is less than Rs 10 lakh. The definition of foreign assets is very abroad. It could be a savings bank account you hold abroad or some immovable property and the like.
Even if you have a signing authority in any bank account located outside India or you have financial interest in any entity (hold stocks, bonds, or a partnership of any kind) you will have to take the e-filing route. Take note that you will have to provide details of all foreign assets on the form. So, it’s better you keep those documents handy before you begin the e-filing process. If you look closely, you will realise that this change is through the addition of a new schedule in the ITR2 and ITR4 forms.
Share in house property: Information related to the percentage of share of the assessee in co-owned property is mandatory. In case the property is co-owned, then the assessee needs to furnish the name of the co-owner, his or her PAN and percentage of share of the other co-owner in the property. These changes can be seen in the ITR2 and ITR4 forms. So, keep your property documents and PAN details handy while filing the returns.
Donations: Until assessment year 2011-12, you were supposed to give details of only the amount of deduction claimed under section 80G when you made a donation to an authorised charitable organisation. Going forward, you will need to provide some finer details as well. Not only the name and address, but also PAN number of donee organisation, along with the amount you donated and deduction you’ve claimed under section 80G. You can see this change in ITR1 and ITR2 as a new schedule.
Worked abroad: If you are someone who has worked abroad for some time and paid income tax in that country and are looking for tax relief here in India, be ready to give more details. While an assessee had to declare only the tax relief claimed till last year, he or she will now have to furnish additional details. These include the name and code of the country visited, income earned, tax paid and tax identification number in the respective country under section 90, section 90A or Section 91. This change can be seen in the forms ITR2 and ITR4 as an additional schedule.
ITR forms going forward need more detailed information. What the IT department is trying to do is create a cross reference, so they can spot any kind of tax avoidance practices. Take these changes very seriously. Even if you’ve been a student abroad last year and opened a savings account and never bothered to close it after coming back to India, it’s best you mention this on the form. If you are someone who isn’t well-versed with filing returns,  take the help of a tax professional or tax portal to ensure you get it right. After all what was supposed to be an easy task, going forward the task has only become more cumbersome.

Love, sex and sports: Asad Rauf admits photos with Leena are real but denies having an affair

Top International Cricket Council ( ICC) umpire Asad Rauf has been accused by a Mumbai-based model, Leena Kapoor, of sexually exploiting her for several months after promising marriage.

Rauf, who is a Pakistani, has been coming to India for several cricket tournaments, including the Indian Premier League, during which Leena alleges they had a relationship.

But Rauf is not the only sportsperson to attain fame for his 'extracurricular act'. Here're a few others who were caught pants down.

In 2010, Indian hockey was rattled by a sex scandal after player TS Ranjitha accused veteran coach MK Kaushik of sexually exploiting her. Ranjitha alleged that Kaushik had for more than a year repeatedly dropped hints to her of a sexual nature which over time became blatant attempts at propositioning her. "One day during the camp in Bhopal, Kaushik sir called me to his room and asked me whether I had had sex. I was quiet for a while, then he said, there is nothing wrong with it, it's good to have sex. I told my senior that Kaushik sir spoke to me in a disgusting manner, and I could not understand why. But I remained quiet about the incident," she said.

Shane Warne
Legendary bowler Shane Warne triggered a storm after his sleazy pictures with two British models went online. The randy Aussie cricket ace had model pals Emma Kearney and Coralie Eichholtz in a spin as he topped their wonderful figures again and again in a memorable innings at Emma's flat in 2006. Shameless Shane, 36, even got his two wicked maidens to play with a giant inflatable middle stump as he showed just why his marriage to long-suffering wife Simone has been reduced to ashes. In 2000, scandal ridden Aussie Test cricketer was hit with yet another scandal when it was revealed he had made obscene phone calls to an English woman while overseas, away from his wife and kids. The scandal hit the British and Aussie press. Pictures revealed that an aggressive and arrogant Warne was clowning around for sex.
Tiger Woods

The world's No. 1 golfer, Tiger Woods, and his Swedish wife, Elin Nordegren, divorced in 2010 following the torrid sex scandal that engulfed Woods in 2009. Woods, 34, allegedly paid the two women $2,000 each for what she described as "dirty" sex. The incident brought the total of Woods' mistresses to 15 in his five-year marriage.
Kevin' Pietersen
All Kevin 'KP' Pietersen needed to complete his English cultural assimilation was a tabloid kiss-and- tell with some publicity-hungry minor celebrity. And ... check. During the fourth Test at Trent Bridge in 2005, Brit rag The People ran an interview with one of KP's conquests, Big Brother 'beauty' and fellow-South African Vanessa Nimmo. Pietersen had dumped Nimmo by SMS after a stormy, one-month affair, and - in true tabloid style - Nimmo spared no detail of their intimate moments. "Kevin was desperate for sex and kept pester- ing me all day," the jilted lover revealed. "I certainly wasn't hit for six by his performance," the spurned woman claimed. "Kevin Cheatersen," the muck-raking tabloid giggled.

Google launches voice app for iPhone

Google showed off enhancements to its voice-based search technology for Apple’s iPhone and said it was testing a new service that will combine its Web-based email with its search engine.

The new version of Google’s search app for the iPhone and iPad, expected to be available within a few days, will let users find information about everything from the weather to nearby movie showings by speaking into the devices, matching some of the capabilities offered by Apple’s own Siri technology.

Google’s new app recites answers to search results in a human sounding voice, similar to Apple’s Siri, which some analysts and technology observers believe could make iPhone users less reliant on Google’s search service.

The news comes as the relationship between the two companies grows increasingly competitive.  Apple said it would no longer offer Google’s YouTube as a pre-loaded app in future versions of its iPhone.

Google, which unveiled a version of the voice-based search app for its Android software earlier this year, showcased the version for Apple devices at a press event at its San Francisco.

The company also announced a test version of a new service that will integrate users’ personal emails into searches on the Google website. The service, which Google said will initially be available to 1 million users, aims to make it easier for consumers to access information such as flight schedules or shipping orders.

HCL launches ME Y2 ICS tablet for Rs 14,999

HCL has launched the ME Y2 Ice Cream Sandwich powered tablet in India for Rs 14,999. The 7-inch tablet rocks a capacitive display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, a Mali 400 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB ROM, a microSD card slot with support of up to 32GB of storage, a 2-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front facing camera.

The tablet also features a 4,000 mAh battery and has a built-in SIM slot for 3G. Unlike most lost cost tablets, the HCL ME Y2 supports 3G via a SIM rather than USB dongles, however the device also comes loaded with a plethora of ports including a mini-USB port. HCL also loads its ME app store on the device for applications, however access to the Google Play market remains blocked which is a big downer as all Android applications are not available on the ME app store.

At a price 14,999, the HCL ME Y2 tablet competes with the likes of the new Reliance 3G tab and the iBall Slide. Due to the absence of the Google Play store, we believe the HCL ME Y2 starts off at an disadvantage.

Key Specifications:
  • 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024×600
  • 1GHz single-core ARM Cortex A9 processor
  • Mali-400 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB ROM

But it is said that she is fooling her fans as her latest pictures are heavily photoshopped.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was spotted with Aaradhya Bachchan in June this year, at that time Aishwarya was looking very fat. So, it really makes us wonder how can she be so thin in just two months. Rumour has it that her recent images are heavily edited. However, her fans are going gaga over her pictures and the people who shot the ad have been showering praises on the diva.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is now a working mum. Almost eight months after she gave birth to daughter Aaradhya last year in November, Ash is on her first assignment - a print advertisement for Kalyan Jewellers.

A still from the photoshoot shows Aishwarya, hair tumbling and eyes raised soulfully in a wash of gold, looking significantly thinner than her full faced and figured appearance at the Cannes Film Festival just two months ago. Suspicious, nearly everyone wants to know if the most beautiful woman in the world has been helped out with a little photoshopping.

For the third time this year, Aishwarya's weight has become the focus of conversations about her. "Slimmer Aishwarya back in business," "Aishwarya is thin and back," "Loses weight, looks hot again," - these are just a sample of the headlines Ash has made over the last day or two.

In May, Aishwarya's failure to lose her extra post-pregnancy kilos sparked a public debate after she was photographed leaving a party at the Ambanis' residence looking noticeably heavier than she had in previous pictures. Indignant detractors said she was failing in her job as a superstar. There were also many who jumped to her defence, arguing that superstars were only human and that it was unfair to impose an impossible ideal on Aishwarya.
